Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) refers to a collection of disorders that affect the joint that joins the skull to the jaw (temporomandibular joint, or TMJ). Patients who have TMJD often experience pain, discomfort, earaches, migraines and difficulty with the jaw. TMJD can be caused by many things, including, but not limited to:
- TMJ/jaw trauma
- Teeth grinding
- Clenching of the jaw
- Dislocation
- Poor posture
- Arthritis
- Bite misalignment
- Stress
- Illness or disease
TMJD can have many symptoms, including some that may seem unrelated. These include:
- Trouble closing and opening the mouth
- Recurring migraines and/or tension headaches (especially if present when you wake up in the morning)
- Problems chewing
- Misaligned bite
- A clicking or popping sound, occurring when the mouth is closed or opened
- Tooth- or earaches that are not caused by infection or other dental health issues
- A “locked” (stiff) jaw or jaw pain when yawning, biting, chewing or speaking
- Recent bite changes
- Frequent soreness or pain in the jaw, especially at specific times throughout the day
