Acidic foods and drinks by nature are hazardous to your oral health because acids in food can actually eat through tooth enamel via a process known as dental erosion. Every time your teeth are exposed to dental erosion, the more damage that can arise, often immediately before you even have a chance to prevent it. Thus, the best way to keep your teeth healthy from acids is to eliminate acids from your diet.
A useful tool in the prevention of dental erosion is saliva, which your body naturally produces. On occasion, there are a few times when the production is hindered or blocked, leading to dry mouth symptoms. Dry mouth has been shown to increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease, so try to avoid dry mouth symptoms after eating by chewing gum for at least 20 minutes.
Acidic foods do more harm when they are eaten by themselves. Thus, avoid snacks between meals as often as you can. Not only can acidic snacks contain high levels of acids, but eating these products can increase the buildup of plaque and food debris on your teeth. In addition, it increases the amount of time in which your teeth are subjected to risky substances. To help balance out the effects of acidic foods and neutralize the acids, be sure to only eat them during large meals.
